In recent years, many health concerns linked to prolonged sitting have come to light. Sitting for more than eight hours a day increases your risk of life-threatening diseases that include cancer and cardiovascular disease. As a result, standing desks began popping up in offices all over the country. When owning a standing desk, it is easy to fall into the habit of remaining standing for most of the day. As the old saying goes, “too much of a good thing can sometimes be bad.” Standing desks are made to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the workday. Doing so maximizes the health benefits of a standing desk.

In a recent CNN article, a few of the most common ways to use a standing desk are broken down. The most common is to stand after eating, utilize an anti-fatigue mat while standing and to alternate from sitting to standing frequently, just to name a few. No matter how you use your standing desk, it is important to utilize it. In a recent study done by The Lancet, the odds of an early death rose to 59% for those that sit for more than eight hours a day and only exercised for five minutes a day. Refuse to be just another statistic; get moving!

When owning a standing desk, the thought of the best way to use it can fall to the wayside. It may seem like all you can do is sit or stand, but there is much more you can do. While at your standing desk, you can do light stretches, and even dance to ensure that you receive the most out of your standing desk. No matter how you use your standing desk, ensure that you are alternating between sitting and standing to get the most out of your newest investment.
